How Does an Inflatable Penile Prosthesis Work?

December 13, 2016

Our love keeps getting better with age.

Approximately 40% of men have been affected by erectile dysfunction (ED) by the time they reach 40.

Unfortunately, that percentage only increases with age. If you are one of the 40 – 70% of men in America suffering from erectile dysfunction, then you are most likely searching for your best treatment option. Our very own urology specialist, Dr. Desi Avila, is a trusted expert in the field of men’s reproductive and sexual health. So, now that you’ve found us, let us help you find the right option for you.

Board-certified urologist Dr. Desi Avila specializes in the implantation of penile prostheses to treat ED in Arizona. This minimally invasive surgical procedure has brought satisfactory sexual activity to over 90% of those who have opted for the implant.

In this procedure, inflatable cylinders are implanted into the penis while connected to a saline-filled reservoir as well as a pump that is completely concealed within the scrotum. Once the unit has been assembled, you will be able to squeeze the hand pump with minimal force which will cause the liquid solution from the reservoir to fill the cylinders in the penis.

While there is a non-inflatable penile prosthesis option as well the inflatable penile prosthesis is the most natural option, looking and feeling like your normal erection before erectile dysfunction occurred. It is also the best option to help preserve your remaining erectile penile muscle and skin. When not in use, pressing the release valve will deflate the penis into a comfortable flaccid state.

The causes of erectile dysfunction are endless, including both physical and psychological origins. Physical conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple sclerosis are health issues that negatively impact a man’s ability to create an erection. Commonly, psychological conditions inhibit erection as well, such as depression, anxiety, or stress. Erectile dysfunction can also become the cause of stress, anxiety, or embarrassment, placing you into an endless loop of cause and effect. It can be exceedingly painful psychologically if it prevents you from being able to impregnate your partner when trying to start a family.

At Ironwood Urology, we provide several different ED treatment options depending on your particular situation and preference, such as oral medications, penile injections, external vacuum devices, and even penile vibratory stimulation. If non-surgical treatments fail to produce the desired results, ask Dr. Avila if you are a candidate for inflatable penile prosthesis.

Don’t let erectile dysfunction win against you. If you or your loved one is suffering, contact Ironwood Urology in Phoenix or Gilbert as soon as possible. Request an appointment online or call (480) 961-2323 today to get started.
