5 Questions You Want to Ask Your Urologist (But Are Too Embarrassed)

December 24, 2016

Doctor and patient

Have you ever been curious about something important that you just couldn’t bring yourself to ask your doctor? Dr. Desi Avila is a highly experienced, board-certified urologist who specializes in male infertility, vasectomy reversal, and provides general urological health consultation and treatment.  When you’re with Dr. Avila you should never be afraid to ask important questions, when you’re wondering about your health. Always remember that medical care and advice provided by your doctor is confidential, with your health concerns being priority number one.

Ironwood Urology presents a few common questions you may be wondering, but don’t want to ask:

1. Q: How often should I be screened for prostate cancer?

A: Once you reach the age of 50, you should be screened for prostate cancer once per year.  However, this also depends on your determined risk for prostate cancer. Generally, if you have a family history of prostate cancer, you will need to begin screening sooner than most others, generally between the ages of 40 and 45.

2. Q: How common is erectile dysfunction?  Am I at risk?

A: Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects millions of men across the globe. There are various causes of ED, including age, obesity, substance abuse, hormonal imbalances, or other conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. With so many potential causes, ED should not be taken lightly and discussed right away with your doctor.

3. Q: Are men at risk for urinary tract infections, or is that something only women get?

A: The answer is yes, men can suffer from urinary tract infections (UTIs) as well as women. The difference is that women are more susceptible to developing a UTI due to the fact that the female urethra is shorter and is located closer to the anus, where harmful bacteria may be hiding.

4. Q: If I want to undergo a vasectomy procedure what are my options if I change my mind?

A: Rest assured, vasectomy procedures can often be reversed for candidates of vasectomy reversal, if you change your mind later in life.

5. Q: What are my options to treat male infertility?

A: Dr. Avila specializes in many treatment options for male infertility. A thorough exam can help find the root of the problem, and present the best treatment options available. If you are in need of surgery to remove a sperm flow obstruction, to repair the varicoceles, or to reverse your vasectomy, you can trust Dr. Avila to provide highly skillful care.

Dr. Avila is ready and willing to answer any of your urological health questions without judgment or prejudice. For more information on any of the above, or to speak directly with your local reproductive and sexual health expert in the Phoenix, Arizona area, request an appointment online or call (480) 961-2323 today.
