Why Can’t I Maintain an Erection?

January 20, 2017

Happy, mature couple with arms stretched out like wings

The timing and the mood are perfect. Your partner is ready for some passion, and you’ve been waiting for this exact moment. It’s time to perform, and you’re excited. Yet you’re unable to achieve an erection no matter how hard you try.

If you are unable to get or maintain an erection firm enough to have sex you may have a condition called erectile dysfunction (ED). It affects millions of men around the world, so you are not alone, no matter how lonely it may feel. Difficulty achieving and/or maintaining an erection is not just a medical condition – it’s a nuisance that can destroy a man’s sex life, wither his self-esteem, and can even threaten the relationship with his significant other.

There are many causes of erectile dysfunction, including the inevitable aging process. Don’t worry though, because we currently offer several different treatments for ED in Phoenix, including both surgical and less invasive methods. With Dr. Desi Avila’s years of experience and leadership in the field of male reproductive and sexual health, you will be under the care of a truly compassionate and competent ED specialist.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Some of the most common causes of erectile dysfunction are diabetes, high blood pressure, certain mental conditions, alcohol consumption, injuries that have caused a disruption in the blood flow to the penis, and treatment for prostate cancer.

Certain medications may also interfere with your ability to achieve an erection, as well as being under- or over-weight. ED can sometimes even be caused by changes in your mental state, such as being overly tired or stressed, or if you have anxiety disorder or diagnosed depression.

You can help prevent being affected by this disorder by monitoring your risk factors and avoiding those within your control, such as high alcohol consumption or illicit drug use. Obvious factors are low testosterone levels, high blood pressure, and medications with impotency as a side effect.

ED Treatment in Phoenix

Medical science has worked hard to develop some very simple ED treatments that are effective, as well as more in-depth, cutting-edge treatments for more complicated cases. Low testosterone levels can be treated through a regimen of testosterone replacement (injections, pills, or gel) or hormone replacement therapy. Other nonsurgical treatments include intraurethral medicated suppositories, injected medications, and of course, the little blue pill we’ve all heard about thanks to the commercials on TV.

The alternative external method we provide is a vacuum erection device, otherwise known as a pump. Dr. Avila specializes in surgical treatments such as prosthetic penile implants. This treatment has shown to provide satisfactory results to an astounding 90% of men who opt to have a surgical implant.

Are you suffering from erectile dysfunction? Trust the number one specialist in male reproductive and sexual health in the Phoenix area with your treatment. Request an appointment online or call (480) 961-2323 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Avila today.
