When to Visit a Urology Clinic

February 25, 2020

Doctor explaining urological problems

Urologists specialize in the maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment of functions and disorders concerning the urinary system, and especially the male reproductive system. It is often said that women always have an OB/GYN, and men (should) always have a urologist.

A urologist is usually diagnosing and treating issues related to a patient’s bladder, kidneys, and prostate. Let’s talk about why you or your loved one should visit a urology clinic.

When to See a Urologist

A primary care doctor may diagnose and treat minor urological problems. However, it is best to consult with a urologist if you are looking for treatment for the following conditions:

Male Infertility

Male infertility pertains to a variety of sexual health disorders. There are reversible causes of male infertility, and a urologist can help treat this through various types of procedures and medications.

Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) arise from bacteria that migrate to the urethra. A weak immune system may contribute to this condition.

Common symptoms of an individual with a UTI include the persistent urge to urinate or a burning sensation when urinating. Other symptoms include urine appearing cloudy, red, bright pink, or cola-colored.

Kidney Disease

Our kidneys are essential for filtering waste and excess fluids from our body. The body releases this liquid waste in the form of urine, but kidney disease causes a gradual loss of this vital function.

Some of the most prominent symptoms of this condition include nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Fluids can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Chest pains can also occur if fluid builds up around the heart’s lining.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common health issues that men experience, especially those who are over the age of 65. In younger men, ED is typically caused by excessive stress or an underlying health condition. There are various types of treatments for ED that work regardless of the cause.

Commonly Performed Urology Tests

Here is a list of tests you may expect during your visit if your urologist discovers something that needs further investigation:

  • Urine Test. Urine tests are used to check for health conditions such as diabetes or a UTI.
  • Imaging Tests. These can include CT scans, MRI scans, or ultrasound. Through these tests, your urologist may be able to determine the location or severity of the problem.
  • Biopsy. A biopsy is an invasive test that requires a tissue sample from the patient. These tissues will help identify many conditions related to cancer and other disorders.
