How to Check if You Have Peyronie’s Disease

November 6, 2020

Urologist healthcare

Peyronie’s disease is characterized by the formation of plaques, which are areas of scar tissue, under the skin of the penis. This condition causes the penis to bend or curve during an erection, because the scar tissue pulls on the skin.

In addition to the curvature, its other symptoms include lumps on the side of the penis, pain with an erection or during intercourse, or changes in the shape of the penis. If you have one or more of these symptoms, then it’s best to consult a urologist to find out whether you have Peyronie’s disease.

Reviewing Your Medical History

Peyronie’s disease is believed to be due to a wound-healing problem. One of the ways in which your doctor can diagnose it is through checking your medical history.

Your urologist will check your medical history for any autoimmune disease, injury to the penis, or surgery in the pelvic area. They will also ask you about your symptoms and when they began.

Physical Exam by a Doctor

During a physical exam to diagnose Peyronie’s disease, your doctor will palpate your penis while it’s not erect in order to determine precisely where the scar tissue is. This will also help them take note of the amount of scar tissue.

To examine the curve of your penis, your urologist can inject medicine to cause an erection. They can also ask you to take pictures of your penis at home to help them determine the degree of the curvature and other details.

Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ)

The symptoms of this condition typically develop gradually. Answering the PDQ will give your doctor an idea about the severity of your condition. It is a 15-item test that addresses physical and psychological factors as well as how bothersome the symptoms are to you.

Your urologist can determine the treatment you need with the results of the physical exam and PDQ.

Ultrasound Imaging

In addition to a physical exam, your doctor may order an ultrasound to check your penis when it is erect. This will allow the doctor to check for blood flow issues, calcium buildup, and the presence of scar tissue. Ultrasound can identify the location of the scarring.
