Penile Curvature Disease: Do You Have Peyronie’s?

In men’s health, there’s a condition that often goes unspoken but is more common than many realize: penile curvature disease. This condition is also known as Peyronie’s disease.

According to medical experts, as many as 10 percent of males between the ages of 40 and 70 have Peyronie’s disease. As it affects one’s reproductive health, the condition negatively impacts well-being.

Let’s discuss penile curvature disease, Peyronie’s disease symptoms, and Peyronie’s disease treatment.

Understanding Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease is a condition where scar tissue, called plaque, forms under the skin of the penis. This tissue builds up inside the penis in a part called the tunica albuginea, which helps keep the penis firm during an erection.

As the plaque develops, it pulls on the surrounding tissue, causing the penis to bend or curve, especially during an erection. Penile curvature can be normal; however, Peyronie’s disease curvature can make erections painful. It can make sexual intercourse uncomfortable, difficult, or even impossible.

Causes of Penile Curvature

Understanding the causes of Peyronie’s disease can help in addressing penile curvature:

1.    Physical Trauma

Injuries to the penis, even a minor one, can lead to scar tissue build-up, especially if it heals improperly. This can happen during vigorous sexual activity or due to accidental injury.

2.    Genetic Factors

If someone in your family has had Peyronie’s disease, your risk may be higher. Researchers are still exploring the genetic links, but early findings suggest a hereditary component.

3.    Age

The likelihood of developing Peyronie’s disease increases with age. This may be due to lower testosterone levels, reduced tissue elasticity, and slower healing processes.

Peyronie’s Disease Symptoms

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of Peyronie’s disease early can lead to better management of the condition:

●     Curvature

A noticeable bend in the penis during an erection is the most common sign. The bend can range from slight to severe, potentially impacting sexual function.

●     Pain

Erections may be painful and can vary in intensity.

●     Scar tissue

Some men feel a hard lump or area of scar tissue under the skin of the penis.

●     Erection issues

Erections might not be as firm, and maintaining them can be difficult.

The psychological effects of penile curvature disease shouldn’t be underestimated. Men with Peyronie’s disease often experience anxiety and depression related to their condition. Peyronie’s disease treatment can help restore the health and well-being of the patient.

Peyronie’s Disease Treatment

If you suspect you have Peyronie’s disease, consult a urologist who specializes in treating this condition. After making a diagnosis, a urologist can discuss your treatment options with you.

Non-Surgical Treatments

  1. Intralesional Injection Therapy: Medications like Xiaflex® or verapamil can be injected directly into the scar tissue (plaque). These injections help to break down the plaque, reducing the curvature and improving penile function.
  2. Oral Medication: Certain oral medications may help manage symptoms, though their effectiveness varies. Medication is usually combined with other treatments.
  3. Vacuum Erection Devices: These devices create a vacuum around the penis, encouraging blood flow and stretching the tissue. They may help reduce curvature and improve erections.
  4. Traction Devices: Worn over some time, these devices apply gentle pressure to straighten the penis. They can be particularly effective in the early stages of the disease.

Surgical Treatments

  1. Scar Removal and Allograft: In severe cases, surgery can remove the scar tissue, and a graft (allograft) is placed to repair the area. This procedure can restore the penis to a more natural shape.
  2. Surgical Plication and Grafting: This surgery involves shortening the side of the penis opposite the curve, balancing the length, and reducing the bend.
  3. Penile Prosthesis: Men with severe Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction may be recommended a penile implant. This procedure helps with achieving an erection and correcting penile curvature.

Besides medical treatments, lifestyle changes and coping strategies can play a supportive role in managing Peyronie’s disease. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help improve overall health and help with recovery, such as:

  • Engaging in regular exercise
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Managing stress levels

If you notice symptoms of Peyronie’s disease, reach out to a urologist specializing in men’s sexual health. They can guide you through your treatment and maximize your recovery.
