How to Prepare for Your Vasectomy Reversal

Choosing to have a life-changing, body-altering procedure if you aren’t positive you won’t change your mind later on in life is a scary decision to make. If you’ve ever gotten a tattoo you didn’t like, or a piercing that just didn’t quite suit you, you know that certain types of procedures once considered permanent can now be reversed.

Making the decision to have a vasectomy is huge, although it is a very effective option for male contraception. Circumstances in life can often change, however, taking us down new and different roads. When you’ve got the right doctor, such as board-certified urologist Dr. Desi Avila, it can most definitely be safely and successfully reversed if you’ve changed your mind about having children.

About a week before you go in for your vasectomy reversal, Dr. Avila will most likely instruct you to stop taking any blood-thinning medications or pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, warfarin or fish oil. Getting these medications out of your system before the surgery will lessen your risk of post-operative bleeding. Be sure that you give Dr. Avila a thorough list of all medications you are taking daily, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs during your initial vasectomy reversal consultation.

When heading into the office for your vasectomy reversal, you should be sure to wear tight-fitting undergarments or athletic supporters. This way your scrotum will be supported and any bandages used will remain in place.

Also, bring your partner or a friend to drive you home afterwards. It could take some time for the effects of the anesthesia to wear off, so you’ll most likely be unable to drive home by yourself. You may experience mild pain afterwards, which can also make driving hazardous.

Since a reversal is now up to 99.5% successful, you can also start planning for fatherhood! Dr. Avila’s high success rate has helped many couples conceive, and oftentimes it is faster than they thought it would be. Don’t be too surprised if your reversal achieves a pregnancy rather quickly and you become a dad sooner than expected!

Dr. Avila has received advanced fellowship training in vasectomy reversals, and he offers the minimally invasice no-scalpel approach, minimizing trauma to the tissues surrounding the site of the procedure. This means less scarring will occur, and recovery will be much easier. He is one of the top vasectomy reversal surgeons in the country, available for you right here in the Phoenix area.

If you are interested in learning more about a reversal and whether it’s right for you, or if you are ready to take the next step and schedule a reversal consultation, please call (480) 961-2323. You can also request an appointment online at one of our two convenient locations, today.
