What Increases the Risk of Male Infertility?

April 3, 2020

About 30% of all infertility cases are partially or fully due to male infertility. Genetics, environment, and one’s own behaviors can all be contributing factors to a man’s fertility.

In order for a couple to conceive, the male must produce sperm that is healthy enough to thrive and make its long journey to the female’s egg. The most common problems associated with sperm include stunted growth, odd shape, incorrect movement (not moving in the right direction), low sperm count, or lack of production of sperm altogether.

But what causes these issues of male infertility?

Factors in Male Infertility

There are a number of things you can do – or stop doing – to help increase your fertility levels. There are also some things that are out of your control. Let’s examine the factors that are involved in male infertility:

Habits

Smoking and drinking can be detrimental to a man’s fertility. Quitting smoking and limiting the intake of alcohol can help a man’s body become more healthy overall, which can improve his fertility levels.

Medications

If you’re seeing a fertility specialist, the doctor will most likely take a look at your medication regimen. Certain antibiotics, steroids, and other prescription medicines can lead to fertility problems.

Exercise

Getting regular exercise is important for everyone’s health, and a healthy body is very important when trying to conceive. Being overweight or obese is a very common cause of male infertility, so it’s important to increase your activity levels.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexual health throughout life can play a role in one’s infertility. STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV are triggers for abnormal sperm production.

Pollution and Toxins

Your environment (where you live and work) can have a negative impact on the ability to get a woman pregnant. Men who are frequently exposed to high levels of pesticides and environmental toxins, such as lead, may suffer from infertility.

Erectile Dysfunction

While ED can be caused by the aforementioned medications, psychological factors can also be an issue. Fortunately, for those dealing with ED, there are many medications that your doctor can prescribe which have the potential to remedy this situation.

Genetics

Never underestimate the role that genetics plays in your health issues. Some genes contain variations, or mutations, that can cause a variety of physical and mental health conditions.

There are several genetic disorders that can affect a man’s sperm production. Three disorders that are known to have adverse effects are Y chromosome deletions, Klinefelter’s syndrome, and Down syndrome.
