Vasectomy and Sexual Health

September 11, 2020

Vasectomy

Are you looking for a permanent, effective, and safe birth control method? If you are, consider a vasectomy. Having a vasectomy allows a man to have sexual intercourse without the risk of creating an unwanted pregnancy.

It is a contraceptive procedure for men that does not affect your vigor or libido. You can still enjoy sexual activities without the risks of having an unplanned conception, and a vasectomy can even improve your and your partner’s sexual health. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of having a vasectomy and where you can go to find out more.

Benefits of Having a Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves stopping the flow of sperm by cutting, clamping, or tying the vas deferens, which is the tube that transfers sperm from the testes. It is a permanent form of birth control, and the man will no longer be able to release sperm when he ejaculates. A vasectomy effectively sterilizes the patient, preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Despite being a permanent method of birth control, you can opt to reverse your vasectomy, allowing you to father children again. A reverse vasectomy is possible even up to 20 years from the date of the vasectomy.

As a reliable birth control method, it is an excellent substitute for hormonal contraceptives if your partner uses them.

Vasectomy in Sexual Health

In a recent study about sexual satisfaction from couples with vasectomized men, males’ sexual satisfaction had improved without reducing pleasure from either partner. There are minimal to no adverse side effects of a vasectomy.

A vasectomy can also indirectly benefit your partner’s sexual health and overall health. Without the need for birth control pills to prevent pregnancy, a woman will no longer experience the side effects of contraceptive pills. They will also no longer need to use other contraceptives such as IUDs, which are invasive and can sometimes create physical problems for the woman.

Overall Health After Having the Procedure

After a vasectomy, there is no change in physical appearance. Aside from taking a short time to heal from the surgery, your overall health and sexual health will not be negatively affected. It does not affect your libido, pleasure, or ability to ejaculate.

A vasectomy prevents pregnancy, but it does not prevent or defend against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A man can still contract or transmit an STD after having a vasectomy, because the only part of the ejaculate that is stopped is the sperm – everything else remains the same. Your doctor can answer any further questions you have about how a vasectomy works.
