How to Prepare for a Urologist Visit

June 30, 2022

If you have a urinary problem or a men’s sexual health issue and are scheduled for an appointment at the urologist’s office, you don’t want any surprises or to be forgetting anything. There are several key things you should know about beforehand in order to have an efficient visit with the urology doctor, so you do not have to come back for an unnecessary follow-up visit.

Let’s go over a few simple but important tips to remember for your urologist visit, and where you can go in Phoenix to see an outstanding and experienced urologist who specializes in men’s health.

Tip #1: Don’t Empty Your Bladder Right Before Your Appointment

At a urologist’s appointment, it’s standard practice to provide a urine sample. The result of your urine sample will help your urologist determine certain urological issues you may have. So, it’s in your best interest not to urinate right before coming to the urologist’s office.

However, if you have a condition where it’s difficult to hold in your urine, either inform the staff immediately upon your arrival so that they can collect the sample, or bring a bottle of water with you to drink as you arrive.

Tip # 2: Be Prepared for a Physical Exam

In addition to gathering a urine sample and possibly also a blood test, urologists perform a physical exam to diagnose your issue. Try not to feel embarrassed or intimidated – this is what the doctor does all day, every day. There’s nothing this physician hasn’t seen before.

Tip #3: Have Your Medical History Ready

Your own medical history and your family’s medical history (parents, siblings, children) can play a significant role in your diagnosis and treatment. For instance, men who have a family history of prostate cancer are more likely to receive a diagnosis of it.

So, gather your and your family’s medical history before visiting your urologist’s office. Also, it is a good idea to have a full understanding of the problems or conditions you or your family have had (especially cancers) so that it is easier for you to answer the urologist’s questions about the various issues.

However, even if you do not know your family’s medical history, your urologists will still be able to give you an accurate diagnosis and treatment – it may just take a little longer and warrant extra tests.

Tip #4: List All of Your Medications and Dosage of Each

Bring a list of your current medications with you, including the dosage and frequency of each. You can also simply place all of your medications in a bag and bring them with you to the doctor’s office. This includes any over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and other supplements you take.

This is important because various medications may affect your urologic system in one way or another.

Tip #5: Bring All Necessary Cards and Paperwork

As with any other medical appointment, make sure you bring your photo ID and health insurance card with you. Also, bring your credit card or debit card in case you’ll have to pay some money out-of-pocket, such as a deductible.
