How Penile Traction Therapy Treats Peyronie’s Disease

March 25, 2022

A Man sitting on the bed

Statistics show that approximately 13 percent of American men suffer from Peyronie’s disease –a condition in which scar tissue builds up beneath the skin of the penis, causing it to curve and/or lose girth and length.

If you’re concerned that you may be experiencing the symptoms of Peyronie’s disease, and you’ve decided that medications are not the route you want to take, penile traction therapy could be worth a shot.  Read on to get a grasp of how this innovative modality works.

Penile Traction Therapy: What It Is and How It Works

Penile traction therapy, also known as penis stretching, involves the use of a traction device to straighten your penis or keep it at a particular angle.

A penile traction device consists of a pelvic ring, which you place at the base of your penis and through which you insert its shaft. You then need to clamp the tip of your penis into the other end of the device. The extension rod between the two parts of the device allows you to gently stretch your penis.

To address curvature, you need to rotate your penis in the opposite direction of how it normally curves during erection.

Your urologist should provide you with detailed instructions to ensure you’re using the device properly.

What Research Says About the Efficacy of Penile Traction Therapy

Since its development, penile traction therapy has become increasingly popular, as it is the only conservative treatment modality that has been reliably shown to improve penile length in the vast majority of patients.
Outlined below are two of the numerous studies conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of penile traction therapy in addressing the symptoms of Peyronie’s disease:

  • Results of a study, in which 55 men with Peyronie’s disease were made to wear a traction device daily for an average of 4.6 hours for six months, showed that the subjects experienced a reduction in penile curvature by up to 20 degrees. The subjects also reported a significant improvement of other symptoms, such as pain and flaccidity.
  • Results of another study, in which 41 men with Peyronie’s disease wore a penile traction device for more than 6 hours every day for 12 weeks, showed that the subjects experienced a 38-degree decrease in curvature. Moreover, those who wore the device for less than 4 hours noticed an average of 20-degree decrease in penile curvature.

Experts highlight consistency as key to achieving optimal results. You need to wear the device daily for at least 30 minutes or according to your urologist’s recommendations to reap its greatest benefits.
